Pregnancy: Now It's Time To Listen To Yourself

Even in today's emancipated world, women tend to listen to other people's needs and wants before they listen to their own. We enjoy supporting other people, and we tend to take care of both our work and our home before we take care of ourselves. We like the feeling of being a caring person and we don't want to be selfish.

When you become pregnant, it's time to change that. Understand that pregnancy is your primary job. Your body, your feelings and thoughts now become the core environment, the first home of your unborn child. And therefore, during pregnancy your job is to start listening to your own needs and take care of yourself in the best way possible. When you truly take care of yourself you naturally also take care of your unborn child.

And so, pregnancy is very much about listening - listening to yourself and to your child needs. Listen to and take care of your physical,  mental, emotional and spiritual needs.

Although it might feel new to you, it's not that difficult. During pregnancy you will experience a natural tendency to turn inward.  Pregnancy is a rather meditative state by nature. It's a time for natural balancing and healing, and the best way to do that is simply to open up to it.

You open up to it when you're in a relaxed, contemplative, meditative state. One of the easiest and simplest way to create that is by listening to New Age music.

New Age Music Helps You Relax During Pregnancy

Not any New Age music of course. Some of it you will like and some of it you won't. Some of it will work for you and some won't. The best way to find out if a piece of music is "good for you" is simply to listen to it - and then listen to yourself and your unborn child. Does it feel good? If you feel any reactions from the child - what are they? Is it peace and even joy, or is there a tension and a sense of uneasiness? Listen and you will know.

Suggested Music To Listen During Pregnancy

My personal suggestions of music to listen during pregnancy are these CDs:

Not just because I like them, and not just because they are standard equipment in many maternity wards in several countries. In fact, Inner Harvest was chosen by a British governmental health program for mothers and babies... but rather because thousands of pregnant women across the world have listened to them and still do, and because many children still appreciate the music many years after they were born. Like this young woman:

“When my Mum was pregnant with me, she often listened to "Inner Harvest" by Pushkar, and I can feel how this CD still creates a special feeling of perfect peace and relaxation for me. Pleasurable "memories" arise.."
Mette, 16 years old

One of the secrets to this music is that Pushkar  - the composer - listened to his sons needs when making the music: "When Arun, our son, was just a little baby, I had to play this kind of music for him. I used the soft bamboo tones that babies love. And I trusted him. When his eyes were sparkling I knew the music was right."

Listen During Entire Pregnancy

Now, once you've found the music, you want to listen to it during the entire pregnancy. By doing so, you develop a tremendously supportive link between yourself and the music, which you then can benefit from both during labor, birth and through the years to come. Isn't that incredible?

You can read much more on how exactly this can be done in  our pregnancy, birth and labor music guidelines here
